The first Captains Team Match of the year took place with a keenly contested match against Worsley Golf Club. Cold conditions and a testing wind meant that conditions were difficult for golf however Head Green Keeper Richie had done an excellent job in preparing the course particularly after the very heavy rain on Tuesday.

Things were not looking good for Ringway when the first two pairs to return to the clubhouse  Ben Aardewerk and Keith Spencer and John Jarvis and Steven Buckley both recorded 4 and 3 defeats. Ben was wearing a very fetching Orange waterproof and we did not know if this was in recognition of his Dutch ancestry or he had received sponsorship from EasyJet.

Things took a turn for the better when the ever reliable pairing of Bob Whydle and Declan McKenna returned a 4 and 3 win. 2017 Player of the Year Gary Kirkwood continued his fine form and had the comeback of the match. Playing with Ian Cochrane they came back from four down to win 2 up.

Only just behind them in the 'never give up in matchplay' category was Cleve McCurdy and Mike Prior who were two down with two to play  however they produced some excellent golf to win the last two holes and halve the match on 18th.

The stage was then set for a dramatic finish with the last pairing on the course Captain Clive Westbrook and Peter Ferneyhough. Coming down the 18th they were one down with the light fading. The Captain hit a dazzling drive down the middle of the fairway then found the back left of the green before chipping to four feet. This was too much for the Worsley pair who conceded the hole and their match was halved.

The final result was 3 -3 which was a fair reflection of the match and is an undefeated start to our season.

Next week we play at Sandiway which is always a difficult course to get a result and we look forward to another good match. Hopefully Bob Whydle will reduce his journey time by 25 minutes by not driving past the entrance to the golf club like he did last year !!

Good Golfing
